Throughout the second semester of my freshman year, I maintained a blog that discusses the issues, primarily domestically, with voting rights. Being a political science major, these issues are of particular interest to me. I feel that universal suffrage is a cornerstone of democracy, and that the preservation of this right is something that all Americans should care a great deal about. Through this blog, I attempted to raise awareness of modern attempts to limit the size of the franchise or to affect the value of each person's vote. I feel that this blog was effective, as it was typically very fit for general consumption because not much prior knowledge was necessary to understand the issues being discussed. Also, the issues within voting rights are not always horribly complex, and thus, it is possible to successfully discuss them in the more succinct form of a blog post.
My favorite of the posts on this blog is undoubtedly this one, which discusses the lack of Congressional representation for Washington DC.
Beyond this blog, there were multiple other blogs that I worked on over the course of the past year. The first of these was dedicated to indie music. Each week I would pick one of my favorite albums of the genre and review it. Often, I would try to choose more well-known indie bands so that people would be better able to relate to the post. I also would try to provide some cultural context to generate interest in less popular bands. I feel that this post in particular exemplifies that.
I also wrote a blog pertaining to travel, one of my greatest passions. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel overseas several times, and each time the experience absolutely enthralled me. I am always seeking new ways to get myself to some other country and truthfully would be fascinated to visit any place in the world. For this reason, this blog topic was a great choice for me. It allowed me to reminisce on my past trips and to share some things that I loved about the other countries that I've made it to. I also used pictures that I had taken when possible, making this blog even more personal to me. I feel that this post about France is one of the blog's best.
